A United States developer and an operator of medical clinics have announced plans to invest $100 million to open a medical complex in Barbados.

American World Clinics, an Arizona-based firm founded by a plastic surgeon, and Winners, LLC, an Arizona-based real estate developer, hope to open the AWC-Barbados campus by 2015.

The companies have secured a lease for 21.5 acres of land in the northern Barbadian parish of St. Peter and have obtained governmental approval, according to a press release from AWC.

The complex will develop around the existing St. Joseph’s Hospital but will include the construction of a new 60-bed surgical hospital with a dozen operating rooms, the release stated.

The hospital will serve residents and visitors, but medical tourism is the core of the companies’ business model, according to AWC.
