This year, the week is themed “Keeping our Borders Safer and Smarter through Technological Innovation,” according to Government Information Services.

“This year’s theme was selected by the department based on initiatives undertaken to secure the territory’s borders in a more efficient and effective manner through utilising new technology to aid in the enforcement of our legislations,” Customs Commissioner Wade Smith said.

As an example of the agency’s use of technology, Mr. Smith mentioned the Regional Clearance System, which is now being piloted. The system, he explained, allows vessel operators to clear customs faster through a pre-arrival notification.

A church service will be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Jost Van Dyke Methodist Church, followed by a luncheon at White Bay Beach Restaurant. Competitions including basketball and domino tournaments will follow on Monday and Tuesday, and an appreciation dinner will be held Wednesday.

The week’s activities will conclude with a movie night at U.P.’s Cineplex on Thursday and an open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday at Customs Headquarters in Road Town.
