With landscaped roofs, “The Cliffs” were designed to be unobtrusive, David Johnson, ONB’s developer, told a crowd of business leaders and government officials while formally opening the villas last Thursday.

Four years after its groundbreaking, work continues at the 400-acre resort, which is slated to have 88 villas eventually.

In a phone interview Monday, Mr. Johnson said The Cliffs will be owned and rented out by ONB “to showcase the quality that we’re capable of producing; to show that the BVI can produce something equal to what can be found in New York or London.”

The largest of the three villas unveiled last Thursday, which sits above the two others, is 1,334 square feet. The others are 890 square feet each, according to ONB’s website.

All three villas were furnished by the Italian luxury goods manufacturer Fendi, Mr. Johnson said.

He added that in addition to the rental villas and other aspects of ONB that have been completed in recent years, prospective buyers currently have three homes under contract. Five others are in various stages of development.

Additionally, about 80 percent of the main buildings and supporting infrastructure has been completed, Mr. Johnson said, with a spa and the development’s “kids’ club” and nature centre scheduled to be built this year.

“Our goal is now to complete all infrastructure as fast as we can build it,” he said.

After officials finished making speeches about the villas at last Thursday’s ceremony, Mr. Johnson presented Premier Dr. Orlando Smith with a ceremonial $100,000 cheque made out to the North Sound Foundation, which the developer said would benefit charities in Virgin Gorda.
