Works at the Baughers Bay desalination plant are complete, and the facility once again is operating at full capacity, the Water and Sewerage Department announced last Thursday.
Many residents and businesses around the territory had been affected by a prolonged water interruption since early September, when an electrical fire significantly slowed production at the plant. After the fire, the facility, which produces about 60 percent of the desalinated water consumed on Tortola, operated for several weeks at half capacity. The load was eased by the plant’s Bar Bay counterpart.
The Baughers Bay facility, once owned by Ocean Conversion-BVI, was handed over to the government in September after Commercial Court Justice Edward Bannister settled a longstanding ownership dispute. Since then, OC-BVI has been operating and maintaining it without a formalised contract. After the electrical fire, the government, as the new owner, was charged with funding and spearheading the repair work. OC-BVI operators confirmed that the work was completed as of last Thursday, according to the WSD.
