On Saturday evening, about a dozen members of the BVI Diabetes Association braved a drizzling rain to light a large blue circle in the Sir Olva Georges Plaza as part of their efforts to bring awareness to their cause.
After the lights went on, they joined hands to form a circle of their own and posed for a photograph. The event was part of the BVIDA’s observance of World Diabetes Day, which is celebrated annually around the world on Nov. 14. Other related activities during the association’s “Health Month” include school visits, radio spots and a community health walk on Nov. 28. “Here in the territory, it is estimated that four out of every 10 persons has diabetes, or is prone to develop the disease if preventive measures are not undertaken and sustained for the duration of life,” Sandra Phillip Hodge, BVIDA public relations officer, said during ZBVI radio’s Almanac programme. However, BVIDA President Bennet Smith added on Saturday, many suffer from the disease unknowingly. “The problem is that in a lot of cases people are not even aware that they have diabetes,” Mr. Smith said. “And some cases where they are aware that they have diabetes, they are reluctant to go for treatment.” The theme of this year’s observance, “Diabetes Education and Prevention,” speaks to this problem. A healthy lifestyle can prevent the onset of diabetes, and can help to control its negative effects. If left untreated, however, the disease can result in loss of limbs, kidney failure, blindness and other serious health problems. “Diabetes has to be properly managed if the … negative effects are not going to manifest themselves over time,” Mr. Smith said. Given the importance of healthy living, the BVIDA this month is promoting a healthy lifestyle for residents of all ages, while focusing primarily on children and adolescents.
