As part of a new initiative to increase the visibility of the territory’s farmers and fishermen, two local non-profit organisations are teaming up to organise a traditional farmers market next month. The event, slated for 6 a.m.-1 p.m. on Dec. 12 at the Sir Olva Georges Plaza, is designed to provide farmers and fishermen with an opportunity to sell their goods directly to the public.

The plaza “was the original site of the Road Town Market,” according to Farmers on the Move, one of the organising associations. “It has been chosen as the location for this special event as a gesture intended to honour our elders and forefathers that worked the land and harvested the sea to sustain their existence.”

Event organisers are inviting all local farmers and fishermen to participate. Poultry, pig, sheep and cattle farmers also are strongly encouraged to attend.

However, only safe, hygienic vending of meats and fresh fish will be allowed, and such meats must be stored in covered containers or coolers.

Space at the event will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are asked to bring their own tables, no larger than seven feet by three feet. Tables can be rented for $10, but no entrance fee will be charged.

For advance registration or more information call 542-0586.
