Floods close ESHS for 2 days PDF Print E-mail

School was canceled around the territory due to the torrential rains and flooding on Monday, but most students were back in the classroom the next day. However, three schools — Elmore Stoutt High, Althea Scatliffe Primary and Enid Adams Pre-primary — remained closed on Tuesday as cleaners and educators worked together to clean up flood damage.

At ESHS, most of the classrooms on the lower level sustained water damage. On Tuesday, leaves lingered on the floors and a few classes still had water in them as ESHS teachers helped with the cleanup effort.

The classes that got flooded the worst were those with open brick walls, according to the ESHS Acting Principal Melissa Amey.

“The water created swampy areas,” Ms. Amey explained.

The Visual Art Department, located on the ground floor, appeared to have been particularly hard hit.  On Tuesday several rooms still were flooded, and cleaners and a few teachers were trying to drain away the water.

Around the campus, trees fell down and walkways were flooded.

“We need to make sure they are removed before the children return to school,” Ms. Amey said. “I don’t think this would have been a nice place for the students to come back in.”

The maintenance crew already was on the campus by early Tuesday morning to clear the compound. Help also came from the BVI Electricity Corporation and the Public Works Department, according to the acting principal.

Classes resumed yesterday.
