It was all about trees on Friday at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park, when staff members from the National Parks Trust sold and gave away fruit trees and flowers.
As a disc jockey played local music in the background, patrons browsed shaving bush, royal palm, ackee, Surinam cherry, flamboyant and many other types of trees. The event was the first annual “Arbour Day in the Park,” and it followed a tree-planting ceremony at Cedar International School. “The aim was to encourage tree planting in the territory,” said Bernicia Herbert, NPT financial comptroller, adding that community support for the event was “excellent.” Susanna Hennighan-Potter, who was among dozens of people who visited the park on Friday, bought pomegranate, orange and mango trees. Ms. Hennighan-Potter recently bought a new house and plans to use the trees to start landscaping her yard. “This is an opportunity to get some fruit tress,” Ms. Hennighan-Potter said. “I like Arbour Day, but I love trees better. I think trees are very important every day of the year. Arbour Day is important because it encourages us to plant trees.”
