Residents of Cane Garden Bay and the surrounding areas gathered on Friday to celebrate the opening of a new police station, before touring the facility. During a ceremony, CGB business owner and singer Quito Rymer urged the community to assist the police in protecting the neighbourhood. Then, he performed a song.

“We are losing both sides of the gun,”Mr. Rymer sang, referring to shooting victims and perpetrators.

The responsibility for keeping the community safe lies with all residents, the singer added.

The new facility stands in the same location as a former station that had sustained extensive damage, including a collapsed roof, according to Police Superintendant Roy Stoutt, who chaired the occasion.

Mr. Stoutt added that a hurricane had contributed to the former building’s dilapidated condition.

Melvin Rhymer was contracted to rebuild at the same site, starting work about a year ago while officers were temporarily housed at one of Mr. Rhymer’s buildings in CGB.

The new, two-story building has accommodations for officers on the upper level and offices and holding cells on the lower floor.

During the ceremony, Police Commissioner Reynell Frazer thanked area residents for their patience.
