Gov’t may standardise taxi fares PDF Print E-mail

The price of a taxi from Beef Island to Road Town could soon become a little more expensive, though figuring out the price could get easier. Under the proposed Taxi Tariff Amendment discussed at a public meeting at the Sir Rupert Briercliffe Hall on Feb. 24, new taxi rates would be set at $5 to $60 per person, plus additional fees for each extra passenger.

Currently, the typical fare for one person from Beef Island to Road Town is $25, according to three taxi drivers surveyed Tuesday. Under the new rates, the same trip would be required by law to cost $30.

The fares would be publicly posted and drivers would be prohibited from over- or under-charging, said Natasha Chalwell, a representative from the BVI Tourist Board, which along with the Ministry of Communications and Works is managing the fare change.

The project is designed to increase transparency and professionalism among taxi drivers, and reduce visitor complaints, Ms. Chalwell said.

She added that the proposed rates were what the board, taxi drivers and the Ministry of Communication and Works collaboratively determined was fair value. Changes to the rates were necessary because they hadn’t been updated in 20 years and costs have gone up, she said.

“You were looking at distance, terrain, your insurance, and you should think forward when proposing these fares,” she said.
