A previously confidential document was tabled in a January House of Assembly meeting, pinning claims of negligence against the Ministry of Communications and Works.
Complaints Commissioner Elton Georges and his staff authored a special report detailing grievances from a Cane Garden Bay native against the ministry and the BVI Electricity Corporation. The ultimate findings of the case suggested that the ministry neglected to properly respond to the customer’s repeated complaints about what she believed to be an excessive connection fee. The complaints commissioner, who operates as the territory’s ombudsman, recommended that the ministry more rigidly follow policies in place to address community concerns in a timely manor, and also order the BVIEC to refund the CGB native $4,500. While the ministry ultimately acknowledged its negligence in responding to the customer, whose complaints were first lodged in 2006, officials in the ministry refused to order the payment to the BVIEC customer, Mr. Georges said.
